The story of John McAfee just keeps getting weirder. If you remember, the McAfee anti-virus software founder is on the lam, wanted for questioning in Belize for the shooting death of Gregory Faull, another expat who lived near him. McAfee claims he's innocent and the victim of a corrupt government who is trying to get him. Yesterday, the story took a surprising turn when Vice Magazine bragged that they had scooped everyone because they were "with John McAfee right now, suckers." Along with the short story, the magazine posted a picture taken with an iPhone, and as The Next Web explains the magazine simply forgot to scrub the picture of the location metadata included within. For a guy on the run, that's not great news. The Next Web tracked the GPS coordinates to a location in Guatemala near the Belize border.

WASHINGTON –  Widespread destruction from Superstorm Sandy will likely make this the largest U.S. relief effort for the American Red Cross, Salvation Army and other groups since Hurricane Katrina's devastation in 2005. By Friday, the Red Cross had raised $117 million in donations and pledges for relief work across 10 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The Salvation Army had raised $5 million online and by phone. Red Cross Senior Vice President Roger Lowe said it would likely be the charity's largest U.S. effort since Katrina, outpacing Hurricanes Ike and Gustav and wildfires in California. Salvation Army Major Darryl Leedom said the population density of the Northeast may require a response that surpasses Katrina in the number of people served and resources required. The initial Red Cross response was paid for out of an annual disaster giving program, and fundraising will replenish those funds to sustain the effort.

As many as seven people have disappeared on a boat in Caribbean waters roiled by Hurricane Sandy, officials said Monday. French officials said at least six of them are French citizens. Dominica Coast Guard Commander Mervyn Pendenque said that his agency is searching for those aboard a rigid-hulled inflatable boat that left his country before noon Sunday en route to Martinique on a trip that should take no more than two hours. Pendenque said Dominican authorities were searching the island's harbors to see if the vessel is anchored to await better conditions. Authorities from French Martinique are conducting an aerial search. The French Transportation Ministry told the Sipa news agency six of the missing are French citizens. Sandy, which killed at least 66 people in the Caribbean, was far to the north, near the U.S. coast, on Sunday, but it was still kicking up waves around the island.

Vietnam Drops Objections to Laos Dam on Mekong | Reduction

Vietnam Drops Objections to Laos Dam on Mekong

Excerpt:

Vietnam has apparently dropped its objections to a dam that Laos is constructing on the Mekong River, saying that the neighboring country has made changes in the design to mitigate any negative downstream impacts. Laos officials reportedly said this week that construction of the Xaburi dam was going ahead. Vietnam last year proposed a 10-year moratorium on any dams on the Mekong and has expressed concern that the dam would kill fish and affect livelihoods along its stretch of the river. Foreign ministry spokesman Luong Thanh Nghi said Thursday that Laos had decided to build the dam "after adjusting the project design to mitigate the impact on the downstream." The U.S. on Monday criticized the decision to go ahead with the dam, citing feared negative environmental impact downstream.
