By Alan Boyle During the buildup to 12/21/12, some people added an extra solstice twist to the Maya doomsday myth, contending that the precise time of the end of the world would be 11:11 UTC, or 6:11 a.m. ET. That's because the turnover date of the Maya Long Count calendar also happens to be the date of the December solstice, when winter starts in the Northern Hemisphere and summer begins in the Southern Hemisphere. Well, the solstice has occurred, and we're all still here. What good is an apocalypse without a Twitter account? Mayan Apocalypse (@kabooooooooom)  has just chimed in with its first tweet: "Sorry everyone, running a bit late." A giant asteroid will make a flyby of Earth over the next few days, and armchair astronomers can watch the action live on their computers. The near-Earth asteroid 4179 Toutatis, which is about 3 miles (5 kilometers) wide, will zoom within 4. 3 million miles (7 million kilometers) of Earth during its closest approach early Wednesday morning. That's too far away to pose any impact threat on this pass, but close enough to put on a pretty good show through top-notch telescopes, researchers say. And some of those scopes will be tracking Toutatis' movements for the benefit of skywatchers around the world. The online Slooh Space Camera and Virtual Telescope Project, for example, will both stream live, free footage of the asteroid from professional-quality observatories. Space news from NBCNews.

A research team led by Steve Howell, NASA Ames Research Center, has announced the discovery of an exoplanet orbiting one of the brightest stars in the Kepler field of view. Coined Kepler-21b, the planet is approximately 1. 6 times the radius of Earth and nearly ten times the mass of Earth. Circling its host star every 2. 8 days, Kepler-21b orbits at a distance of six million km – nearly ten times closer than Mercury orbits the sun. The surface temperature is calculated to be 2,960 Fahrenheit. While this temperature is nowhere near the habitable zone in which liquid water might be found, the planet’s size is approaching that of Earth. The parent star, HD 179070, a little hotter and brighter than the sun, is 352 light years away. Somewhat similar to the sun, the parent star has a mass of 1. 3 solar masses, is larger at 1.
